Teleology as used in philosophy refers to a system that attempts to explain events in terms of their goals, purpose or ends. It is traced back to the 11th century AD where it was explored by Aristotle and Plato. A teleological action, thing or process is one that is for the sake of the final cause or ending. It may either be an intrinsic finality or extrinsic one depending on whether its ending is for the sake is of itself or something external.
